Vivekananda
"Within my lifetime, the Goddess has come from obscurity to the forefront of spiritual consciousness. All over the world, people are coming to appreciate and venerate the Divine Feminine principle.
There are now many resources to help the inexperienced find a way to her. There are always new people in each generation, mostly adults - since there are few children who have had what might be called 'a Goddess upbringing' - who want to know the Goddess for themselves. Where do they start?
All of the books currently on the market come from a particular standpoint; from feminism - both radical and Christian - from psychology or from anthropology. Indeed, all books about the God-dess have their own partisan bias. They have been shaped by feminist or psychoanalytical tools and beg questions which may not be those asked by people intent on learning about the Goddess for them-selves.
My own standpoint, to be quite clear at the outset, has been that of someone whose cosmology has always included a feminine as well as / Page xii / a masculine divine principle. Over the last twenty-four years, my vi-sion has been shaped by a background of Celtic studies, and a training in the Western esoteric and mystical traditions. My commitment to the Goddess has led me to seek out her wisdom in many aspects of my life.
I freely acknowledge, as all women must, a debt to the courageous and historic liberation which feminism as a political movement has gained for my gender. But I also acknowledge a debt to the traditional guardians of the Goddess's wisdom, whether they be male or female, for these dedicated human beings have kept open the paths to her, often at the cost of their own lives, enabling and encouraging many to follow their example. To those named and nameless mystics, discoverers, writers and practitioners, we all owe a great deal.
The Goddess is usually defined in two ways: by her functions - which are usually classified in terms of the female life cycle - or according to the culture within which she appears. I have chosen to adopt a slightly different approach so that the Goddess alone is my point of reference. I have defined her under a few of her many titles. My intention in so doing is that the reader may approach her directly and form an immediate relationship with her aspects which is not dependent on dualistic ideologies. For the Goddess is the sum of her parts, being both many and indivisible.
I have also made little distinction between the Goddess and her exemplars, her priestesses and heroines', who have been homes for the Goddess and mediators of her many functions. Such women have transcended, or perhaps I should say, transformed their human condition and become real mediators of the Goddess. Similarly, I have included saints and the Blessed Virgin Mary herself in this book, for they also show us aspects of the Divine Feminine and they have the virtue that nearly everyone in the West is familiar with the qualities mediated by them. In choosing this holistic approach, I hope to present a new way of co-operative working with the Goddess which will benefit all newcomers to the temple of her heart.
Every human being is a child of the Goddess. A few years ago I remember picking up a book on the Goddess which said in its opening pages words to the effect, 'Men, if you are reading this book, then put it down now. This is a book for women'. I remember being deeply shocked, since the book purported to be a serious study of the Goddess in her many aspects.
It is true that there are many imbalances in our society, but I believe that the Goddess has re-emerged to help us find ways of restoring / Page xiii / creation and of healing divisions. not of making them. Accordingly, in this book. I shall not speak about patriarchy and matriarchy. or seek to lay any blame upon either gender of our species.
The way of the Goddess is one of natural law and natural wisdom. It stems from primordial times and is still being walked by the native peoples of the world. It is a living tradition.
It is primarily the people of the West who are orphans of the God-dess. The social and political reasons for this state of desolation have been documented in many books which deal with the Divine Femi-nine. Both women and men need to find their Mother, relating to her and her creation in fresh and balanced ways, for every one of us needs to drink of her wisdom and realign ourself with her natural laws.
I have assumed throughout this book that the reader is a member of the human family who seeks the transformative insights which only the Goddess can bring, but who is mature enough to realise that these insights must be shared with other sisters and brothers if the way of the Goddess is to become commonplace in the West.
As the Goddess has not been an integral part of Western life for the last two thousand years, every one of her children is to some extent a disruptive and maladjusted child. Many wonderful and ethically-motivated groups have sprung up which offer ways to fmd the Goddess. But some have been less balanced and have attempted to dictate fundamental method of working with or worshipping her. Because the way of the Goddess is unlike other spiritual paths in the West - having no formal or state-administered temples and no organised priesthood - every single person must first find their own way to her. But no one person can claim to own the Goddess or part of her tradition.
This book attempts to help the reader find the Goddess in his or her own way, while also taking into account the difficulties which a twentieth century person has in entering into a relationship with the primal qualities of the Goddess.
A word on the arrangement of the material in this book would, I feel. be useful. Part 1 is really a clearing ground where we look at some of the arguments, opinions and problems that must be dealt with. Here we attempt to clarify our own thoughts. feelings and prejudices about the Goddess. Unless we deal with these first, we will not really be in any fit condition to enter the Temple of the Goddess. In Part 2 we explore the real elements of the Goddess in the light of many of her exemplars. This is the factual and intellectual part of the book, where information is given. Part 3 attempts to go beyond the preced-ing parts of the book and establish practical methods of working with, / Page xiv / and relating to, the Goddess. There is no Part 4, unless you continue the book yourself.
Generally speaking, I have referred directly by name only to each aspect of the Goddess, rather than repeating pt.rases such as, 'the Tibetan dakini.Mamaki', as there is a glossary on Page 121 which lists each Goddess by name and gives details of her country, or culture of origin and specific attribute.
What is written in these pages is necessarily very condensed, due to the format of this series, but with consistent and devoted meditation on the Goddess, you will be able to prove - or disprove - this material for yourself.
If you find what you do not like or cannot accept in these pages, then I hope you will question your response more deeply, for maybe that is precisely the way in which your appropriate response to the Goddess lies. There are such things as 'anti-books', as I call them, texts which outrage you, provoke response and make you want to write your own. Well, go ahead, do it!
If you cannot work with the practical exercises presented on Page 106 in the ways suggested, then find your own ways or adapt them to your own needs. That is what they are for. There is no virtue in the written word unless it can be translated into real experience.
A portion of the royalties received from this book will be given each year to charity as my thanksgiving to the Mother for helping to bring this book to birth after a gestation of ten years. It has been a long labour; I now ask the reader to foster this child and make sure it grows up blessedly.
May She be with you wherever you go and guide you your whole life long!"
Caitlin Matthew

UNDER THE HILL
There was an old woman lived under the hill
And if she's not gone, she lives there still.
Traditional Rhyme
"The advent of a new phase of spirituality is upon us in the shape of the Goddess. Many people are discovering her for the first time, yet for humanity in general this is not something new but the resurgence of a once familiar deity.
The questions arise: where has the Goddess been? why has her archetype been missing for so long from our culture? These are deep questions for which there are no easy answers. The course of spiritual history is not plotted in the same way as we document political or social history; the same rules and criteria cannot be ap-plied.
The fact remains that Western humanity has been without means or access to the Divine Feminine for over a thousand years, except in many little unappreciated ways which we shall be reviewing in the following chapters.
Page 4
"This does not mean that the Goddess, in all her aspects, has been absent from us. Rather, it is we who have absented ourselves from her. She abides yet, in all her changes and transformations, like the old woman of the nursery rhyme above. She is the power under the hill to whom many have gone in praise, worship and thankfulness as well as in pain, anguish and despair. And yet, many others have never really found the door into that hill. Why not?"

THE SIRIUS CONNECTION

"In several ancient sources it has been found that there were four 9-day weeks to each lunar month, making a month of 36 days. This 9-day phase has been found in ancient Greek, Babylonian, Chinese and Roman sources, among others. As these lunar computations did not fit with a year of 360 days~ the calendars were altered to a 10-month year. This was an attempt to regulate the 'new' year to fit the 'old' 360-day year!9
"The ancient Celts, who were decidedly lunar orientated,
ascribed magical powers to the number"

FINGERPRINTS OF THE GODS
Graham Hancock

Page 213
"On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, the Hopi Indians of Arizona (who are distant relatives of the Aztecs record three previous Suns, each culminating in a great annihilation followed by the gradual re-emergence of mankind. In Aztec cosmology, of course, there were four Suns prior to our own. Such minor differences concerning the precise number of destructions and creations envis- aged in this or that mythology should not distract us from the remarkable convergence of ancient traditions evident here. All over the world these traditions appear to commemmorate a widespread series of catastrophes. In many cases the character of each successive cataclysm is obscured by the use of poetic language and the piling up of metaphor and symbols. Quite frequently, also, at least two different kinds of disaster may be portrayed as having occurred simultaneously (most frequently floods and earthquakes, but sometimes fire and a terrifying darkness).
All this contributes to the creation of a confused and jumbled picture. The myths of the Hopi, however, stand out for their straightforwardness and simplicity. What they tell us is this:
The first world was destroyed, as a punishment for human misde-meanours, by an all-consuming fire that came from above and below. The second world ended when the terrestrial globe toppled from its / Page 214 / axis and everything was covered with ice. The third world ended in a universal flood. The present world is the fourth. Its fate will depend on whether or not its inhabitants behave in accordance with the Creator's plans.53
We are on the trail of a mystery here. And while we may never hope to fathom the plans of the Creator we should be able to reach a judgement concerning the riddle of our converging myths of global destruction."
What are they trying to say?"

"The triplicities and ninefold permutations derived from these aspects are far more subtle than arbitrary divisions of the Goddess into triple moon-phases, or as reflections of the female life cycle-Maiden / Page 37 (Fig 6 and 7 omitted / Page38 / Mother and Crone. It is not that such definitions are invalid so much as that each of the triple-aspects of the Goddess contains elements of the ennead.
This ennead of aspects is endlessly adaptable for it is made up of nine, the most adjustable and yet essentially unchanging number. However one chooses to add up multiples of nine, for example 54, 72, 108, they always add up to nine."

"The pre-eminent number in the code is 72. To this is frequently added 36, making 108, and it is permissible to multiply 108 by 100 to get 10,800 or to divide it by 2 to get 54, which may then be multiplied by 10 and expressed as 540 (or as 54,000, or as 540,000, or as 5,400,000, and so on). Also highly significant is 2160 ( the number of years required for the equinoctial point to transit one zodiacal constellation), which is sometimes multiplied by 10 and by factors of ten (to give 216,000, 2,160,000, and so on)"

A
QUEST
FOR THE HIDDEN LEGACY OF MANKIND
"In short it seems that secret knowledge is indeed available in the myth of Osiris and in the dimensions of the Great Pyramid. With this secret knowledge, if we wanted to fix a specific date - say 1008 years in the future - and communicate it to other initiates, then we could do so with the 'special number' 14 ( 72 x 14 = 1008)."

With episodic sense of dej avu. Page17
And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you;
10
And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you;
from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.
11
And I will establish my cove-nant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood;
neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.
12
And God said, This is the token of the covenant
which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: '
13
I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth.
14
And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud:
15
And I will remember my cove- nant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.
16
And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting
Covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.

REACH FOR THE STARS
Arthur C.Clarke
"Neither of us said anything for a while. I remember feeling a foolish surprise at being one of the first men in the world to learn the appalling truth; for somehow I never doubted that it was the truth. And I wondered how the rest of humanity would react when the revelation came.
Presently I broke into the silence. "If you're right," I said, "why have they - whatever they are - never made contact with us?"
The Professor looked at me rather pityingly. "We think we're good engineers," he said, "but how could we reach them? Besides, I'm not at all sure that there haven't been contacts."
All the while the pattern on the screen had never changed. I tried to imagine streets and buildings and the creatures going among them, creatures who could make their way through the incandescent rock as a fish swims through water. It was fantastic. . . and then I remembered the incredibly narrow range of temperatures and pressures under which the human race exists. We, not they, were the freaks, for almost all the matter in the universe is at temperatures of thousands or even millions of degrees.
"Well," I said lamely, "what do we do now?"

" ' This is a slightly unusual request,' said Dr Wagner, with what he hoped was commendable restraint. 'As far as I know, it's the first time anyone's been asked to supply a Tibetan monastery with an Automatic Sequence Computer. I don't wish to be inquisitive, but I should hardly have thought that your - ah - establishment had much use for such a ma-chine. Could you explain just what you intend to do with it?'
'Gladly,' replied the lama, readjusting his silk robes and carefully putting awa the slide rule he had been Using for currency conversions. 'Your Mark V Computer can carry out any routine mathtiilatical operation involving up to ten digits. However, for our work we are interested in letters, not numbers. As we wish you to modify the output circuits, the machine will be printing words, not columns of figures.'
'I don't quite understand. . .'
'This is a project on which we have been working for the last three centuries - since the lamasery was founded, in fact. It is somewhat alien to your way of thought, so I hope you will listen with an open mind while I explain it.'
'Naturally.'
'It is really quite simple. We have been compiling a list which shall contain all the possible names of God.'
'I beg your pardon?'
Page 16
'We have reason to believe,.' continued the lama imper-turbably, 'that all such names can be written with not more than nine letters in an alphabet we have devised.'
'And you have been doing this for three centuries?'
'Yes: we expected it would take us about fifteen thousand years to complete the task.'
'Oh,' Dr Wagner looked a little dazed. 'Now I see why you wanted to hire one of our machines. But what exactly is the purpose of this project?'
The lama hesitated for a fraction of a second, and Wagner wondered if he had offended him. If so, there was no trace of annoyance in the reply.
'Call it ritual, if you like, but it's a fundamental part of our belief. All the many names of the Supreme Being - God, Jehova, Allah, and so on - they are only man-made labels. There is a philosophical problem of some difficulty here, which I do not propose to discuss, but somewhere among all the possible combinations of letters that can occur are what one may call the real names of God. By systematic per-mutation of letters, we have been trying to list them all.'
"I see. You've been starting at A A A A A A A . . . and work- ing up to Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z . . .'
'Exactly - though we use a special alphabet of our own. Modifying the electromatic typewriters to deal with this is, of course, trivial. A rather more interesting problem is that of devising suitable circuits to eliminate ridiculous com- binations. For example, no letter must occur more than times in succession.'
' Three? Surely you mean two.'
'Three is correct: I am afraid it would take too long to explain why, even if you understood our language.'
Page 17
'I'm sure it would,' said Wagner hastily. 'Go on.'
'Luckily, it will be a simple matter to adapt your Automatic Sequence Computer for this work, since once it has been programmed properly it will permute each letter in turn and print the result. What would have taken us fifteen thousand years it 'will be able to do in a hundred days.'
Dr Wagner was scarcely conscious of the faint sounds from the Manhattan streets far below. He was in a different world, a world of natural, not man-made, mountains. High up in their remote aeries these monks had been patiently at work, generation after generation, compiling their lists of meaningless words. Was there any limit to the follies of man- kind? Still, he must give no hint of his inner thoughts. The customer was always right. . .
'There's no doubt.replied the doctor, 'that we can modify the Mark V to print lists of this nature."
Page20 ' Well they believe that when they have listed all his names - and they reckon that there are about nine billion of them - Gods purpose will be achieved. "

FROM THE ASHES OF ANGELS
Andrew Collins 1996
Page 13
"Enoch had many associations with early modern Freemasonry, or speculative Masonry as it is known. According to one legend,7 Enoch, with foreknowledge of the coming Deluge, constructed, with the help of his son Methuselah, nine hidden vaults, each stacked one on top of the other. In the lowest of these he de-posited a gold triangular tablet (a 'white oriental porphyry stone' in one version) bearing the Ineffable Name, the unspoken name of the Hebrew God, while a second tablet, inscribed with strange words Enoch had gained from the angels themselves, was given into the safe-keeping of his son. The vaults were then sealed, and upon the spot Enoch had two indestructible columns constructed - one of marble, so that it might 'never burn', and the other of Laterus, or brick, so that it might 'not sink in water,.8
On the brick column were inscribed the 'seven sciences' of man- kind, the so-called 'archives' of Masonry, while on the marble column he 'placed an inscription stating that a short distance away a priceless treasure woull' be found in a subterranean vault'.9 Enoch then retired to Mount Moriah, traditionally equated with the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, where he was 'translated' to 'heaven.
In time, King Solomon uncovered the hidden vaults while con- structing his legendary temple and learned of their divine secrets. Memory of these two ancient pillars of Enoch was preserved by the Freemasons, who set up representations of them in their lodges. Known as the Antediluvian Pillars, or Enoch's Pillars, they were eventually replaced by representations of the two huge columns named 'Jachin' and 'Boaz', said to have stood on each side of the entrance porch to Solomon's Temple. 10
What exactly the nine hidden vaults constructed by Enoch were meant to represent is completely unknown. They might well refer to the nine levels of mystical initiation contained in the hidden teachings of the Kabbalah, accepted among the Dead Sea communities. On the other hand, perhaps the legends of the hidden vaults referred to actual underground chambers located / 14 Page / somewhere in the Holy Land and constructed to hide sacred objects of importance to the future of mankind.

The patriarch Enoch's legendary status among both Jewish mystics and modern-day Freemasons stems from a very strange assump-tion. In the Bible, Chapter 5 of Genesis contains a genealogical list- ing of the ten antediluvian patriarchs, from Adam down to Noah. In each case it gives only their names, their age when they 'begat' their first son, and the age at which they died, with one notable exception - Enoch. In his case, he is twice said to have 'walked with God', an obscure statement elaborated only in the second instance with the enigmatic words: 'and he was not, for God took him'." Whatever the writer of Genesis had been attempting to convey by these words, they were taken to mean that Enoch did not die like the other patriarchs, but was instead 'translated' to heaven with the aid of God's angels. According to the Bible, only the prophet Elijah had been taken by God in a similar manner, so Enoch (whose name means 'initiated') had always been accorded a very special place in Judaeo-Christian literature. Indeed, Hebrew mysticism asserts that on his 'translation' to heaven Enoch was transformed into the angel Metatron.'2
What does it mean: 'translated to heaven'? As we know, people are not carried off to heaven by angels while still living their life on earth. Either these words are metaphorical or else they need drastic reappraisal. Might Enoch have been simply taken away from his people by visitors from another land who were looked upon as angels by the rest of the community? And where was heaven, anyway? We know it is deemed to be a place 'in the clouds', but did this literally mean somewhere beyond the physical world in which we live?
Once in this place called heaven, Enoch would appear to have made enemies immediately, for according to one Hebrew legend, an angel named Azza was expelled from Paradise - the alternative name for the heavenly domain - for objecting 'to the high rank given to Enoch' when he was transformed into Metatron.13

Ark.. Noah's was built of gopher wood (prob. cy- press) and was 450 ft. long, 75 ft. beam, and 45 ft. deep, daubed with bitumen. It had 4 decks with ports round the upper decks and a large cabin on the upper deck (Gen. 6, 14 to 8, 19).
Moses' ark was a basket platted of papyrus reeds and coated with bitumen (Ex. 2, 2-6). The Ark of the Covenant or Testimony was a chest some 3 ft. 9 in. long, 27 in. broad and deep. It was made of acacia wood and overlaid with gold. Rings were fitted and staves for carrying it. It was covered with a golden lid called the Mercy Seat which bore the figures of 2 cherubim (qv),
who faced one another, their wings overarching the Mercy Seat. God dwelt bet. the cherubim and spoke from there (Ex. 25, 10 If.; 30,6; Num. 7, 89; 1 Sam. 4, 4). 1'here is no mention of the Ark in the hist. books after it had been deposited in Solomon's temple (1 Kings 8, 1 If.). Poss. it was carried away by Shishak along with the treasures of the House of the Lord in 930 BC, but it may still have been there in Jeremiah's time (3, 16 If.), and then looted by Nebuchadnezzar in 587 BC. To begin with the Ark was regarded almost as a fetish, but the attitude changed with the passing years till it became simply the receptacle for the testimony on the tables of stone (Ex. 31, 18). It was placed in the Holy of Holies and was the most venerated object in the worship of the Jews.
Armageddon. Acc. to (Rev. 16,16) this is the world's last battlefield; the kings of the earth and the Beast agst. God. Actually it is the Mt. of Megiddo around which several bloody battles had been fought (Judg. 5, 19; 2 Kings 9, 27; 23,29; Zech. 12, 11).
Armlet. (Ex. 35, 22 RV; Num. 31, 50 RV; cf. 2 Sam. I, 10.) A kind of metal bracelet worn round the upper arm, frequently by royalty.
