THE INFLUENCE OF THE EYIL EYE.

AN allusion to the deadly power of the evil eye is found in Ecclesiastes. Various ancient writers give accounts of people who possessed this power to a wonderful extent. The cases of Medea and of the Gorgons will recur to everyone. Pliny speaks especially of the Scythian and Illyrian women. Ovid, Plutarch, Horace, Herodotus, and other classical writers fre-quently allude to it.. St. Mark puts an allusion to the evil eye in the mouth of Christ, and St. Paul refers to it in the Epistle to the Galatians.

The early Fathers of the Church reason much about it, with the result of leaving the matter in great confusion, but none of them question that the powers exist. They usually ascribe to the Deity the source of this great influence, but later writers assign it to the malevolence of Satan.

The more Wicked, the Stronger the Evil Eye.- The more wicked any person is the more power has he to exercise the evil eye.

A person has been known with an evil eye of such power that once while he was looking attentively on a precious stone of fine water, exquisite cutting, and admirable polish, in the hands of a lapidary, the jewel of its own accord split into two parts.

The Eye of Envy.-The evil eye obtains its power from the envious disposition that lies behind it. It emits a malig-nant and poisonous spirit, which has a disastrous effect on the person on whom the eye is cast. It is of greatest force when the cast of the eye is oblique.

The Sirius Connection

The Eye of Horus was, of course, the left or lunar Eye; there was also a right Eye, traditionally the property of Ra, which his daughter Sekhmet hurled at those who saw fit to break the old god's covenants (cosmic laws?) (see Chapter 3). This right Eye later became the famous Uraeus, which featured in the head- dresses and ceremonial regalia of pharaohs, priests, and several popular deities. Regarding the dimensions of the Eye, Lucie Lamy has this to say:

Egyptian arithmetic was based on dimidiation - halving - rather than on addition, and the eye plays a part in the notation. The hekat, the unit of volume used in the measurement of grain, is represented graphically by the Oudja Eye, and its fractions by the individual strokes of the glyph.

Thus the lunar Eye is at the basis of the measurement of both time, because of the lunation which defines the month, and volume, because of its fractioning. It is interesting to recall that while vision through one eye is sufficient for the perception of distance, it is only when the ocular axes of both eyes converge that we are able to form the notion of three-dimensional space and therefore of volume.5"

"Since Egyptologists appear to be so sure that there is no evidence of an advanced technology in pre-dynastic Egypt, from where or from whom did the ancient Egyptians cull their knowledge of mathematics and astronomy? Another point that merits con- sideration is that although many of these figures could have been arrived at by normal mathematical processes, they could also be seen to suggest that our planet had at some time in the past been viewed from outside of its orbit! Now, we can go along with those psychics and mental time-travellers who suggest that the Atlanteans were the brains behind these structures, despite the Sumerian tale of Oannes (see pages 80-3) with his scale-like apparel (which could just as easily have been somebody dressed in a space suit or Atlantean diving gear as an alien Fish-Man), or we can favour the extraterrestrial connection, that is that beings from Sirius were the teachers.

One is inclined to think that if a Siriun connection was effected at some distant period in the past history of our planet, it occurred during the time of the early formation of the Atlantean civilisation, and it was to the Atlantean scientists that the Siriuns imparted their information concerning all matters cosmological. There is a third, and perhaps more scientifically acceptable / Page 31 / explanation which came my way: one of the Timeless Ones, the Creators of Universes, in taking human form, effected a genetic mutation which was then passed on to his own children as a sleeper gene (allele?). This gene, which has now spread across the planet, will be the deciding factor as to who is destined to survive the anticipated pole shift (quantum leap), the shadow of which is slowly eclipsing our planet (see The Gaia Dialogues and Cosmic Connections).

One of the most potent symbols used in ancient Egyptian arts of healing, magic and protection was the Eye of Horus. It was / Page 182 / everywhere in evidence, carved on sarcophagi, on stelae, on boats. The Uraeus or female serpent, worn on the brow of the king as the 'burning Eye of Ra' was believed to scatter his adversaries. However, there were, as we know, two eyes outlined in the Stela of Metternich as: 'the divine Eye of the right and the divine Eye of the left', each of which carried its own special significance. The left, or lunar Eye, was essentially the Eye of Horus or the Eye of Healing, while the right Eye, or Uraeus, was more concerned with magical and protective functions."

Summary of the nine clues:

Clue 1:

The ninth point in the directions of the wind is at the centre. It is the point from which all else flows.

Clue 2:

In myths and legends nine has the quality of initiation and beginning. So nine is not the end of the line, but more a jumping-off point, a beginning, a point of origin.

Clue 3:

Nine is closely allied to reversals as in the trick with three figure numbers. Nine is some kind of mirror.

Clue 4:

The sigma code, the hidden blueprint of all numbers, has nine values. The nature of nine is the code itself. (It exists, in other words, to serve nine.) Like a selfish gene in the chain the character of nine dominates the basic digital code of all numbers.

In addition number nine leaves no trace.

Clue 6:

In subtraction number nine leaves no trace.

Clue 7:

Multiplication by nine always ends in nine. In this case imagine a causeway of stones; if we skip in twos or threes or fours or whatever, but repeating it nine times (the equivalent of multiplying by nine), then we always land on a stone marked by nine.

Clue 8:

A number upon division by nine leaves a remainder equal to the sum of its digits. If the digits of the original number add up to nine, then the number is exactly divisible by nine. (Greek symbol omitted) 9 has an echo of zero to it.

Clue 9:

The multiplication tables, as revealed by the sigma code, have in-built symmetries between numbers 1/8, 2/7, 3/6, 4/5. Number nine acts as both border and centre in the secret map we make of all our multiplications.

I lose myself in wonder at the beauty and the intricacy in which the numbers depend on each other, in secret. On the surface one would never imagine this closed circuit of intrigue. In the Mandala of nine, the digits have life-long partnerships, number ONE with EIGHT, TWO with SEVEN, THREE with SIX, FOUR with FIVE. Each pairing has an identical shape - when its multiplication sequence is plotted on the sigma circle, one is the reverse of the other.

Like partners in an eternal dance they turn, their bond being the number nine which holds them together and at the same time keeps them apart. Behind the whole revolution is this special mark, the character that keeps secrets and takes on several disguises - now a boundary, now a mirror, now unseen, and then taking complete hold of another's identity. Patterns

The essence of mathematics is to look for patterns.

Our minds seem to be organised to search for relationships and sequences. We look for hidden orders.

These intuitions seem to be more important than the facts themselves, for there is always the thrill at finding something, a pattern, it is a discovery - what was unknown is now revealed. Imagine looking up at the stars and finding the zodiac!

Searching out patterns

is a pure delight.

Suddenly the counters fall into place and a connection is found, not necessarily a geometric one, but a relationship between numbers, pictures of the mind, that were not obvious before. There is that excitement of finding order in something that was otherwise hidden.

And there is the knowledge that a huge unseen world lurks behind the facades we see of the numbers themselves.

The golden ratio is also found in a triangle when it is isosceles (in which the two opposite sides are equal), but with a particular base angle.

The ratio of the long side of the triangle to the shorter base is in the golden ratio when the base angle is 72°. This means the angle at the top vertex is 36°. Each angle of the Golden Triangle sums to nine!

The Greeks believed that at the heart of perfect proportion was the golden ratio and is it not pleasing to find number nine buried in the works, to those of us who chase its tail?

The unique property of the golden rectangle is that if a square is taken away from it, the remaining part is a rectangle, which has the same proportions to the original rectangle. That means it is golden as well. The process continues, with each removal of a square, leaving another golden rectangle. Smaller and smaller we go and if the points of the construction are joined together in a smooth curve, we enter a spiral winding down into its vanishing point, the hidden eye.

The eye of the spiral is of course the shape of a vanishing 9.

The triangle is a line that bends twice to close on itself, enclosing en route a total of 180° in its internal angles.

A square is a line that is more formal in its bending around comers, enclosing each time a right angle so that the sum of the internal angles is 4 x 90° = 360°.

A circle is a line that bends round continuously, about a centre point, enclosing the angle of 360°.

In general, any regular polygon encloses

a total internal angle of (2n-4) right angles

where n is the number of sides of the

polygon.

Enjil's Mark

The numbers 1-9 are symbols and exert a powerful hold on the imagination - they act as some kind of bridge to other worlds. Because they are inviolate and basic, they become the hidden steps to another kind of understanding, to prophecy and divination.

In researching this book I came across the Cabalah, and the faith it had in Numerology, which used the numbers 1-9 to divine a person's character. I tried the method on Enjil and got the number 5, for the Self or Life Number which is the number that describes the essence of a character. It is also the number for magic in Numerology. "

"Multiplication does not always increase a number. If the multiplier is less than 1 we have a decrease. When we. multiply by .5 we get a half of the original number; when we multiply by 1 we reduce the number to a tenth of itself; and so on. The square of a small number (less than 1) is a very small number; the cube is an extremely small number.

Thus: .0012= .00001,

.0013 = .000000001.

Even when a number is a very little less than one, con-tinual multiplication of it by itself (raising it to higher and higher powers) finally reduces it to an exceedingly small quantity.

.99999 is a mere one-hundred-thousandth less than 1; if we multiply any number by it we deduct a one-hundred-thousandth of the number. Thus .999992 is a very little more than .99998. .9999910 is a little more than .99990.

COMPARISONS

IF anyone thinks he has no use for arithmetic let him consider the number of comparisons he makes every day. Most comparisons involve the working of some sort of sum; even when we compare colours we are apt to make some kind of computation of the proportions of the primary colours in them. We are always making comparisons, well or ill, accurately or inaccurately; one of the virtues of arithmetic is that it enables one to make comparisons neatly and accurately. One is proud of having a sense of proportion,and proportion is essentially mathematical-it is a comparison of sizes measured in some way or other. Even where arithmetic does not enter directly and obviously into a comparison a knowledge of the possibilities of arithmetical comparison is not amiss; it does at least rule out many crudities and absurdities.

I saw some time ago the statement that if all the herrings landed at Yarmouth in a season were placed head to tail in a line they would stretch nine times round the world. The writer had evidently been impressed by the vast number of herrings in the catch, and he had looked for a comparison that would show the immensity of the number of herrings. As we have already seen, if we want to make the most of a large number of objects, we place them in a line. We get the greatest possible length by placing the herrings head to tail, and that is what the writer had done.

The idea of placing the herrings in a nine-deep queue / Page 62 / right round the world might be impressive if we once began to realize what such a queue means. Let us see where the comparison came from. We may allow a herring and a half to the foot:

= 1 x 5280 to the mile

= 7920, or say 8000 to the mile.

Nine times round the world is 25,000 x 9 miles. So altogether there are 25,000 x 9 x 8000 herrings,

= 1,800,000,000 herrings.

That is a herring each for every man, woman and child in the world. It is astonishing how often such comparisons come unbidden, when one is used to considering things arithmetically.

To anyone who has considered what a million is, the number itself-not far short of 2000 millions-is sufficiently impressive. The mere counting of such a catch-if one did trouble to count them-would be a job for eternity rather than time. At the excessive rate, for herrings, of 100 per minute we found that it would take a month to count a million. The herring catch would take 1800 months or 150 years for one man to count it.

Let us try the effect of division on the number. If we omit very small children England has a population of about 36 millions-that number is convenient for division into 1800 millions:

1800 divided by 36 = 50.

That is 50 Herrings each. So that the population of England might have a herring each on almost every Friday of the year from the Yarmouth catch.

With the necessary information we could find how many boxes the herrings would fill, and how many railway waggons

"There is a simple trick involving numbers that can be guaran-teed to produce astonishment at any party. You ask someone to write down his telephone number, then to write it a second time with the figures jumbled up. Next, tell him to subtract the smaller from the larger number, and keep on adding up the figures in the answer until he has reduced it to one figure. (5019 becomes 10, which in turn becomes 1 plus 0 - that is, 1.) When he has finished, you may tell him authoritatively: 'The answer is nine.'

You can afford to be dogmatic; for the answer is always nine. It works with any set of figures, no matter how small or how large. Jumble up the figures, subtract one from the other, and the answer always reduces to 9.

I have no idea why this is so, and have never come across a mathematician who could explain it. It is just one of those peculiar properties of numbers."

'As far as I know, it's the first time anyone's been asked to supply a Tibetan monastery with an Automatic Sequence Computer. I don't wish to be inquisitive, but I should hardly have thought that your - ah - establishment had much use for such a ma-chine. Could you explain just what you intend to do with it?'

'Gladly,' replied the lama, readjusting his silk robes and carefully putting awa the slide rule he had been Using for currency conversions. 'Your Mark V Computer can carry out any routine mathtiilatical operation involving up to ten digits. However, for our work we are interested in letters, not numbers. As we wish you to modify the output circuits, the machine will be printing words, not columns of figures.'

'I don't quite understand. . .'

'This is a project on which we have been working for the last three centuries - since the lamasery was founded, in fact. It is somewhat alien to your way of thought, so I hope you will listen with an open mind while I explain it.'

'Naturally.'

'It is really quite simple. We have been compiling a list which shall contain all the possible names of God.'

'I beg your pardon?'

'Yes: we expected it would take us about fifteen thousand years to complete the task.'

'Oh,' Dr Wagner looked a little dazed. 'Now I see why you wanted to hire one of our machines. But what exactly is the purpose of this project?'

The lama hesitated for a fraction of a second, and Wagner wondered if he had offended him. If so, there was no trace of annoyance in the reply.

'Call it ritual, if you like, but it's a fundamental part of our belief. All the many names of the Supreme Being - God, Jehova, Allah, and so on - they are only man-made labels. There is a philosophical problem of some difficulty here, which I do not propose to discuss, but somewhere among all the possible combinations of letters that can occur are what one may call the real names of God. By systematic per-mutation of letters, we have been trying to list them all.'

"I see. You've been starting at A A A A A A A . . . and work- ing up to Z Z Z Z Z Z Z Z . . .'

'Exactly - though we use a special alphabet of our own. Modifying the electromatic typewriters to deal with this is, of course, trivial. A rather more interesting problem is that of devising suitable circuits to eliminate ridiculous com- binations. For example, no letter must occur more than times in succession.'

' Three? Surely you mean two.'

'Three is correct: I am afraid it would take too long to explain why, even if you understood our language.'

These are almost exactly the proportions given to these numbers on the scale of a slide rule, so the designers of that instrument clearly recognized that such a bias existed. "Three o'clock and a still starlight night in mid-September in Upper Egypt. At this hour the village is usually asleep, but to-night it is a stir for this is Nauruz Allah, the New Year of God, and the narrow streets are full of the soft sound of bare feet moving towards the Nile. The village lies on a strip of ground; one one side is the river, now swollen to its height, on the other are the floods of the inundation spread in a vast sheet of water to the edge of the desert. On a windy night the lapping of wavelets is audible on every hand; but to-night the air is calm and still, there is no sound but the muffled tread of unshod feet in the dust and the murmur of voices subdued in the silence of the night.

In ancient times throughout the whole of Egypt the night of High Nile was a night of prayer and thanks giving to the great god , the Ruler of the river, Osiris himself. Now it is only in this Coptic village that the ancient rite is preserved, and here the festival is still one of prayer and thanksgiving. In the great cities the New Year is a time of feasting and processions, as blatant and uninteresting as a Lord Mayor's Show, with that additional note of piercing vulgarity peculiar to the East.

In this village, far from all great cities, and-as a Coptic community-isolated from and therefore uninfluenced either by its Moslem neighbours or by foreigners, the festival is one of simplicity and piety. The people pray as of old to the Ruler of the river, no longer Osiris, but Christ; and as of old they pray for a blessing upon their children and their homes.

There are four appointed places on the river bank to which the village women go daily to fill their water-jars and to water their animals. To these four places the villagers are now making their way, there to keep the New Year of God.

The river gleams coldly pale and grey; Sirius blazing in the eastern sky casts a narrow path of light across the mile-wide waters. A faint glow low on the horizon shows where the moon will rise, a dying moon on the last day of the last quarter.

The glow gradually spreads and brightens till the thin crescent, like a fine silver wire, rises above the distant palms. Even in that attenuated form the moonlight eclipses the stars and the glory of Sirius is dimmed. The water turns to the colour of tarnished silver, smooth and glassy; the palm-trees close at hand stand black against the sky, and the distant shore is faintly visible. The river runs silently and without a ripple in the windless calm; the palm fronds, so sensitive to the least movement of the air, hang motionless and still; all Nature seems to rest upon this holy night.

The women enter the river and stand knee-deep in the running stream praying; they drink nine times, wash the face and hands, and dip themselves in the water. Here is a mother carrying a tiny wailing baby; she enters the river and gently pours the water nine times over the little head. The wailing ceases as the water cools the little hot face. Two anxious women hasten down the steep bank, a young boy between them; they hurriedly enter the water and the boy squats down in the river up to his neck, while the mother pours the water nine times with her hands over his face and shaven head. There is the sound of a little gasp at the first shock of coolness, and the mother laughs, a little tender laugh, and the grandmother says something under her breath, at which they all laugh softly together. After the ninth washing the boy stands up, then squats down again and is again washed nine times, and yet a third nine times; then the grandmother takes her turn and she also washes him nine times. Evidently he is very precious to the hearts of those two women, perhaps the mother's last surviving child. Another sturdy urchin refuses to sit down in the water, frightened perhaps, for a woman's voice speaks encouragingly, and presently a faint splashing and a little gurgle of childish laughter shows that he too is receiving the blessing of the Nauruz of God.

A woman stands alone, her slim young figure in its wet clinging garments silhouetted against the steel-grey water. Solitary she stands, apart from the happy groups of parents and children; then, stooping , she drinks from her once, pauses and drinks again; and so drinks nine times with a short pause between every drink and a longer pause between every three. Except for the movement of her hand as she lifts the water to her lips, she stands absolutely still, her body tense with the earnestness of her prayer, the very atmosphere round her charged with the agony of her supplication. Throughout the whole world there is only one thing which causes a woman to pray with such intensity, and that one thing is children. " This may be a childless woman praying for a child, or it may be that, in this land where Nature is as careless and wasteful of infant life as of all else, this a mother praying for the last of her little brood, feeling assured that on this festival of mothers and children her prayers must perforce be heard. At last she straightens herself, beats the water nine times with the corner of her garment, goes softly up the bank, and disappears in the darkness.

Little family parties come down to the river, a small child usually riding proudly on her father's shoulder. The men often affect to despise the festival as a woman's affair, but with memories in their hearts of their own mothers and their own childhood they sit quietly by the river and drink nine times. A few of the rougher young men fling themselves into the water and swim boisterously past, but public feeling is against them, for the atmosphere is one of peace and prayer enhanced by the calm and silence of the night.

For thousands of years on the night of High Nile the mothers of Egypt have stood in the great river to implore from the God of the Nile a blessing upon their children; formerly from a God who Himself has memories of childhood and a Mother. Now, as then, the stream bears on its broad surface the echo of countless prayers, the hopes and fears of human hearts; and in my memory remains a vision of the darkly flowing river, the soft murmur of prayer, the peace and calm of the New Year of God.
