Reactions against signs: sight, sound and the taste of language
"By 1764, the Abbe de l'Epee had about a dozen children attending his lessons in the Rue des Moulins every Tuesday and Friday afternoon. New pupils would be given a month or two of private tuition before being admitted to the class, so that the Abbe could establish a relation-ship with them based on their own natural signs, introduce them to the elements of Christianity, and - perhaps most important of all - prepare them for the revelation that any ideas they were able to express in signs could also be represented by alphabetic characters, either writ- ten or manually spelt.l
On their first day in the class, new pupils would be given chalk and a slate by the older ones, and assisted in tracing out the letters of the alphabet. Then they would play some classroom ~ames, using cards with names of parts of the body written on them, or a kind of printer's case containing the letters of the alphabet written on slips of paper. By the end of the first lesson they would be expected to know the meanings of about twenty everyday words of written French. In their second lesson, the Abbe himself would teach them the infinitive form"

He paused to see if I understood his words. He nodded at my comprehending eyes and continued with his powerful hands. 'I see more in one minute, understand more in deaf sign than you hear in speech words. You must wait for words to speak, one after the other, but I see meaning all at once in a face.'20
'He was never confused in his own language,' as Ruth Sidransky puts it; and she herself, though a normal speaker of English, always felt more at home using gestural signs. When she translates the tales her parents told her into a kind of broken telegraphic English, it is not because their language was faulty, but in order to convey its concen- trated richness and its haunting gestural rhythms. Her own bilingual experience with English and signs has convinced her that exact transla- tion between the two languages is impossible. 'Signs do not transpose to the printed page,' she says, echoing the Abbe de l'Epee himself: 'they are understood only in the flesh, hand to hand, face to face.' Trying to set down her parents' stories in black and white, using 'universal English', she is constantly dissatisfied - never able to 'conjure the magic of my first language', as she puts it, with its 'sentences, liquid, rising not from the human voice but from the human body'21"

The Law of Miracles
Page 273
"The Vedic scriptures declare that the physical world op- erates under one fundamental law of maya, the principle of relativity and duality. God, the Sole Life, is Absolute Unity; to appear as the separate and diverse manifestations of a creation He wears a false or unreal veil. That illusory dual-istic veil is maya. Many g!eat scientific discoveries of mod- ern times have confirmed this simple pronouncement of the ancient rishis.
Newton's Law of Motion is a law of maya: "To every ac-tion there is always an equal and contrary reaction; the mu-tual actions of any two bodies are always equal and oppo-sitely directed." Action and reaction are thus exactly equal. "To have a single force is impossible. There must be, and always is, a pair of forces equal and opposite."
Fundamental natural activities all betray their mayic ori-gin. Electricity, for example, is a phenomenon of repulsion and attraction; its electrons and protons are electrical op-posites. Another example: the atom or final particle of mat- ter is, like the earth itself, a magnet with positive and nega- tive poles. The entire phenomenal world is under the inexo- rable sway of polarity; no law of physics, chemistry, or any other science is ever found free from inherent opposite or contrasted principles.
Physical science, then, cannot formulate .laws outside of maya: the very fabric and structure of creation. Nature her-self is maya; natural science must perforce deal with her in- eluctable quiddity. In her own domain, she is eternal and inexhaustible; future scientists can do no more than probe / Page274 / one aspect after another of her varied infinitude. Science thus remains in a perpetual flux, unable to reach finality; fit indeed to discover the laws of an already existing and functioning cosmos but powerless to detect the Law Framer and Sole Operator. The majestic manifestations of gravita- tion and electricity have become known, but what gravita-tion and electricity are, no mortal knoweth.°
To surmount maya was the task assigned to the human race by the millennial prophets. To rise above the duality of creation and perceive the unity of the Creator was con-ceived of as man's highest goal. Those who cling to the cos-mic illusion must accept its essential law of polarity: flow and ebb, rise and fall, day and night, pleasure and pain, good and evil, birth and death. This cyclic pattern assumes a certain anguishing monotony after man has gone through a few thousand human births; he begins then to cast a hopeful eye beyond the compulsions of maya.
To remove the veil of maya is to uncover the secret of creation. He who thus denudes the universe is the only true monotheist. All others are worshiping heathen images. So long as man remains subject to the dualistic illusions of Na-ture, the Janus-faced Maya is his goddess; he cannot know the one true God.
Delusive maya in man manifests itself in the world as avidya, literally, "not-knowledge," ignorance. Maya or avidya can never be destroyed through intellectual conviction or analysis, but solely through attaining the interior state of nirbikalpa samadhi. The Old Testament prophets, and seers of all lands and ages, spoke from that state of consciousness.
Ezekiel said: + "Afterwards he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east: and, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory." Through the divine eye in the / Page 275 / forehead (east), the yogi sails his consciousness into omni-presence, hearing the Word or Aum, divine sound of "many waters": the vibrations of light that constitute ,the sole reality of creation.
Among the trillion mysteries of the cosmos, the most phenomenal is light. Unlike sound waves, whose transmission requires air or other material media, light waves pass freely through the vacuum of interstellar space. Even the hypotheti-cal ether, held as the interplanetary medium of light in the undulatory theory, may be discarded on the Einsteinian grounds that the geometrical properties of space render un-necessary a theory of ether. Under either "hypothesis, light remains the most subtle, the freest from material dependence, of any natural manifestation.
In the gigantic conceptions of Einstein, the velocity of light - 186,300 miles per second - dominates the whole Theory of Relativity. He proves mathematically that the ve- locity of light is, so far as man's finite mind is concerned, the only constant of a universe in flux. On the sole "abso- lute" of light velocity depend all human standards of time and space. Not abstractly eternal as hitherto considered, time and space are relative and finite factors. They derive their conditional measurement-validities only in reference to the yardstick of light velocity.
In joining space as a dimensional relativity, time is now stripped to its rightful nature: a simple essence of ambiguity. With a few equational strokes of his pen, Einstein banished from the universe every fixed reality except that of light.
In a later development, his Unified Field Theory, the great physicist embodies in one mathematical formula the laws of gravitation and of electromagnetism. Reducing the cosmical str-ucture to variations on a single law, Einstein has reached across the ages to the rishis who proclaimed a sole fabric of creation: a protean maya.
On the epochal Theory of Relativity have arisen the mathematical possibilities of exploring the ultimate atom. Great scientists are now boldly asserting not only that the atom is energy rather than matter, but that atomic energy is essentially mind-stuff./ Page 276 / The frank realization that physical science is concerned with a world of shadows is one of the most significant ad-vances," Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington writes in The Nature of the Physical World." In the world of physics we watch a shadowgraph performance of the drama of familiar life. The shadow of my elbow rests on the shadow table as the shadow ink flows over the shadow paper. It is an symbolic, and as a symbol the physicist leaves it. Then comes the al-chemist Mind who transmutes the symbols. . . . To put the conclusion crudely, the stuff of the world is mind-stuff."
Page 274
°Marconi, the great inventor, made the following admission of scientific inadequacy before the finalities: "The inability of science to solve life is absolute. This fact would be truly frightening were it not for faith. The mystery of life is certainly the most persistent problem ever placed be- fore the thought of man."
+E,zekiel 43: 1-2.

"Not all in a minute, then, will the narrator be finished with the story of our Hands. The seven days of a week will not suffice, no, nor seven months either. Best not too soon make too plain how much mortal time must pass over his head while he sits spun round in his spell. Heaven forbid it should be seven years "

After that short meeting with their good and trusted friend Thomas. Alizzed and the scribe thanked him most lovingly for the benefit of his wisdom, over the matter of their questing, in saying their good byes, each wished the other well a not unusual seven times, and of course promised not to leave it quite so long in the future

'Of all the other stupendous inventions,' Galileo once remarked,
what sublimity of mind must have been his who conceived how to
communicate his most secret thoughts to any other person, though
very distant either in time or place, speaking with those who are in the
Indies, speaking to those who are not yet born, nor shall be this
thousand or ten thousand years? And with no greater difficulty than
the various arrangements of two dozen little signs on paper?
Let this be the seal of all the admirable inventions of men.3
"If the 'precessional message' identified by scholars like Santillana, von Dechend and Jane Sellers is indeed a deliberate attempt at communi-cation by some lost civilization of antiquity, how come it wasn't just written down and left for us to find? Wouldn't that have been easier than encoding it in myths? Perhaps.
Nevertheless, suppose that whatever the message was written on got destroyed or worn away after many thousands of years? Or suppose that the language in which it was inscribed was later forgotten utterly (like the enigmatic Indus Valley script, which has been studied closely for more than half a century but has so far resisted all attempts at decoding)? It must be obvious that in such circumstances a written / Page 287 / legacy to the future would be of no value at all, because nobody would be able to make sense of it.
What one would look for, therefore, would be a universal language, the kind of language that would be comprehensible to any technologi-cally advanced society in any epoch, even a thousand or ten thousand years into the future. Such languages are few and far between, but mathematics is one of them - and the city of Teotihuacan may be the calling-card of a lost civilization written in the eternal language of mathematics.
Geodetic data, related to the exact positioning of fixed geographical points and to the shape and size of the earth, would also remain valid and recognizable for tens of thousands of years, and might be most conveniently expressed by means of cartography (or in the construc- tion of giant geodetic monuments like the Great Pyramid of Egypt, as we shall see).
Another 'constant' in our solar system is the language of time: the great but regular intervals of time calibrated by the inch-worm creep of precessional motion. Now, or ten thousand years in the future, a message that prints out numbers like 72 or 2160 or 4320 or 25,920 should be instantly intelligible to any civilization that has evolved a modest talent for mathematics and the ability to detect and measure the almost imperceptible reverse wobble that the sun appears to make along the ecliptic against the background of the fixed stars (one degree in 71.6 years, 30 degrees in 2148 years, and so on).
The sense that a correlation exists is strengthened by something else. It is neither as firm nor as definite as the number of syllables in the Rigveda; nevertheless, it feels relevant. Through powerful stylistic links and shared symbolism, myths to do with global cataclysms and with precession of the equinoxes quite frequently intermesh. A detailed interconnectedness exists between these two categories of tradition, both of which additionally bear what appear to be the recognizable fingerprints of a conscious design. Quite naturally, therefore, one is prompted to discover whether there might not be an important connection between precession of the equinoxes and global catastrophes."

"Hans Castorp, when Fraulein Kleefeld related this to him, ex- pressed the view that there was some sort of sense in it: the appari- tion here, the death there - after all, they did hang together. And he consented to be present at a spiritualistic sitting, a table-tipping, glass-moving game which they had detetermined to undertake with Ellen Brand, behind Dr. Krokowski's back; and in defiance of his jealous prohibition.
A. small and select group assembled for the purpose, their theatre being Fraulein Kleefeld's room. Besides the hostess, Fraulein Brand, and Hans Castorp, there were only Frau Stohr, Friiulein Levi, Herr AlbIn, the Czech Wenzel, and Dr. Tmg-Fu. In the evenIng, on the stroke of ten, they gathered privily, and in whispers mustered the apparatus Hermine had provided, consisting of a medium. sized round table without a cloth, placed in the centre of the room, with a wineglass upside-down upon it, the foot in the air. Round the edge of the table, at regular intervals, were placed twenty-six little bone counters, each with a letter of the alphabet written on it in pen and ink. Fraulein Kleefeld served tea, which was gratefully received, as Frau.Stohr and Fraulein Levi, despite the harmlessness of the undertaking, complained of. cold feet and palpitations. Cheered by the tea, they took their places about the table, in the rosy twilight dispensed by the pink-shaded table- lamp, as Fraulein Kleefeld, in concession to the mood of the gath- ering, had put out the ceiling light; and each of them laid a finger of his right hand lightly on the foot of the wineglass. This was the prescribed technique. They waited for the glass to move.
That should happen with ease. The top of the table was smooth, the rim of the grass well ground, the pressure of the tremulous fingers, however lightly laid on, certainly unequal, some of it being exerted vertically, some rather sidewise, and probably in sufficient strength to cause the glass finally to move from its position in the centre of the table. On the periphery of its field it would come in contact with the marked counters; and if the letters on these, when put together, made words that conveyed any sort of sense, the resultant phenomenon would be complex and contaminate, a mixed product of conscious, half-conscious, and unconscious elements; the actual desire and pressure of some, to whom the wish was father to the act, whether or not they were aware of what they did; and the secret acquiescence of some dark stratum in the soul of the generality, a common if subterranean effort toward seemingly strange experiences, in which.the sup / page 660 / pressed self of the individual was more or less involved, most strongly, of course, that of little Elly. This they all knew beforehand - Hans Castorp even blurted out something of the sort, after his fashion, as they sat and waited. The ladies' palpitation and cold extremities, the forced hilarity of the men, arose from their knowledge that they were come together in the night to embark on an unclean traffic with their own natures, a fearsome prying into unfamiliar. regions of themselves, and that they were awaiting the appearance of those illusory or half-realities which we call magic. It was almost entirely for form's sake, and came about quite conventionally, that they asked the spirits of the de-parted to speak to them through the movement of the glass."

With the elements arranged in a periodic table, even in 1922 there were a few gaps, corresponding to un- discovered elements with atomic numbers 43, 61, 72, 75, 85 and 87. Bohr's model predicted the detailed properties of these "missing" elements and suggested that element 72, in particular, should have properties similar to zirconium, a forecast that contradicted predictions made on the basis of alternative models of the atom. The prediction was con- finned within a year with the discovery of hafnium, ele-ment 72, which turned out to have spectral properties exactly in line with those predicted by Bohr.
This was the high point of the old quantum theory. Within three years, it had been swept away, although as far as chemistry is concerned you need little more than the idea of electrons as tiny particles orbiting around atomic nuclei in shells that would "like" to be full (or empty, but preferably not in between). * And if you are interested in the physics of gases, you need little more than the image of atoms as hard, indestructible billiard balls. Nineteenth- century physics will do for everyday purposes; the physics of 1923 will do for most of chemistry; and the physics of the 1930s takes us about as far as anyone has yet gone in the search for ultimate truths. There has been no great break- through comparable to the quantum revolution for fifty years, and in all that time the rest of science has been catching up with the insights of a handful of geniuses. The success of the Aspect experiment in Paris in the early 1980s marked the end of that catching-up period, with the
'I am, of course, exaggerating the simplicity of chemistry here. The "little more" that is needed to explain more complex molecules was developed in the late 1920s and early 1930s. using the fruits of the full development of quan- tum mechanics. The person who did most of the work was Linus Pauling, more familiar today as a peace campaigner and proponent of vitamin C, who received the first of his two Nobel Prizes for the work, being cited in 1954 "for his research into the nature of the chemical bond and its application 10 the elucidation of the structure of complex substances." Those "complex sub-stances" elucidated with the aid of quantum theory by Pauling, a physical chemist, opened the way to a study of the molecules of life. The key signifi-cance of quantum chemistry to molecular biology is acknowledged by Horace Judson in his epic book The Eighth Day of Creation; the detailed story, alas, is beyond the scope of the present book.

"The pre-eminent number in the code is 72. To this is frequently added 36, making 108, and it is permissible to multiply 108 by 100 to get 10,800 or to divide it by 2 to get 54, which may then be multiplied by 10 and expressed as 540 (or as 54,000, or as 540,000, or as 5,400,000, and so on). Also highly significant is 2160 ( the number of years required for the equinoctial point to transit one zodiacal constellation), which is sometimes multiplied by 10 and by factors of ten (to give 216,000, 2,160,000, and so on)

Why a mathematical language?
Page 197 "...Perhaps because, no matter what extreme changes and transforma-tions human civilization might go through, the radius of a circle multiplied by 2pi (or half the radius multiplied by 4pi) would always give the correct figure for that circle's circumference. In other words, a mathematical language could have been chosen for practical reasons: unlike any verbal tongue, such a code could always be deciphered, even by people from unrelated cultures living thousands of years in the future."

THE FINGERPRINTS OF THE GODS
Graham Hancock 1995
Page272
Chapter 31
"Archaeo-astronomer Jane B. Sellers, who studied Egyptology at the University of Oticago's Oriental Institute, spends her winters in Portland, Maine, and summers at Ripley Neck, a nineteenth-century enclave 'downcast' on Maine's rocky coast. 'There,' she says, 'the night skies can be as clear as the desert, and no one minds if you read the Pyramid Texts out loud to the seagulls. . .'1
One of the few serious scholars to have tested the theory advanced by Santillana and von Oechend in Hamlet's Mill, Sellers has been hailed for having drawn attention to the need to use astronomy, and more particularly precession, for the proper study of ancient Egypt and its religion.2 In her words: 'Archaeologists by and large lack an understanding of precession, and this affects their conclusions concerning ancient myths, ancient-gods and ancient temple align- ments . . . For astronomers precession is a well-established fact; those working in the field of ancient man have a responsibility to attain an understanding of it.,3
It is Sellers's contention, eloquently expressed in her recent book, The Death of Gods in Ancient Egypt, that the Osiris myth may have been deliberately encoded with a group of key numbers that are 'excess baggage' as far as the narrative is concerned but that offer an eternal calculus by which surprisingly exact values can be derived for the following:
1. The time required for the earth's slow precessional wobble to / Page 273 / cause the position of sunrise on the vernal equinox to complete a shift of one degree along the ecliptic (in relation to the stellar background);
2 The time required for the sun to pass through one full zodiacal segment of thirty degrees;
3 The time required for the sun to pass through two full zodiacal segments (totalling sixty degrees);
4 The time required to bring about the 'Great Return for the sun to shift three hundred and sixty degrees along the ecliptic, thus fulfilling one complete precessional cycle or 'Great Year'.
The precessional numbers highlighted by Sellers in the Osiris myth are 360, 72, 30 and 12. Most of them are found in a section of the myth which provides us with biographical details of the various characters. These have been conveniently summarized by E. A. Wallis Budge, formerly keeper of Egyptian Antiquities at the British Museum:
The goddess Nut, wife of the sun god Ra, was beloved by the god Geb. When Ra discovered the intrigue he cursed his wife and declared that she should not be delivered of a child in any month of any year. Then the god Thoth, who also loved Nut, played at tables with the moon and won from her five whole days. These he joined to the 360 days of which the year then consisted [emphasis added]. On the first of these five days Osiris was brought forth; and at the moment of his birth a voice was heard to proclaim that the lord of creation was born. 5 Elsewhere the myth informs us that the 360-day year consists of '12 months of 30 days each,.6 And in general, as Sellers observes, 'phrases are used which prompt simple mental calculations and an attention to numbers'!
Thus far we have been provided with three of Sellers's precessional numbers: 360, 12 and 30. The fourth number, which occurs later in the text, is by far the most important. As we saw in

THE ORION MYSTERY
Robert Bauval & Adrian Gilbert
1994
Page188
Every civilisation has looked far into its mythical past and provided itself with a divine pedigree. For the Greeks this was the Olympian epoch, when the gods fraternised with mortals, as Homer described in the Iliad and the Odyssey. For the Hebrews it was the time of Genesis and the Patriarchs, expounded in the Old Testament. For the Egyptians, whose civilisation preceded the Greeks and the Hebrews, the first golden age, when gods fraternised with humans, was called Tep Zepi, which translates loosely as the First Time.2
They believed that the system of cosmic order and its transference to the land of Egypt had been established a long time before by the gods. Egypt had been ruled by a race of gods for many millennia before it was entrusted to the mortal yet divine line of pharaohs. The pharaohs were the sacerdotal connection with the gods and, by extension, represented the link with the First Time; they were the custodians of its established laws and wisdom. Everything they did, every action, every move, every decree had to be justified in terms of the First Time, which served as a sort of covenant of kingship, to abide by and to explain their actions and deeds. This was true not only for the king and his court but applied to all natural events: the movement of the celestial bodies, the unexplained phenomena of nature and the ebbing and rising waters of the Nile. It would not be an exaggeration to say that everything a pharaoh did was connected with the First Time; hence, the careful re-enactment of mythical events which could be either cosmic or secular or both combined in a duality by the power of symbols and rituals. It is not surprising that this blissful First Time was invariably referred to as the Time of Osiris.3
The rule of Osiris on earth was seen as Egypt's happiest and most noble epoch and was believed to have been in the distant abyss of time, long before that which Egyptologists are willing to accept as realistic. When the Egyptians built the pyramids, they were thinking of an important event that related to the First Time; whatever that might have been, we now know it Page 189 / had something to do with the stars and, more particularly, the stars of Orion and the star Sirius - the cosmic lands of the souls.
What makes the First Time so interesting is not just that the Egyptians were adamant about its real existence but would pride themselves on being able to compute its epoch, and indeed any epoch in their past. To do that they would need to be aware of precession."

The last verse of Revelation
13 is verse 18
'Here is wisdom, let him that hath understanding count the num-ber of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is
six hundred threescore and six.'
"... The prophetic quality in these words has thrilled the imagination of readers throughout the age. The meaning they bear is remarkable and not easy to understand, for the mystical language of numerology has long been moribund. However, by reference to the ancient canon of the Temple, it is possible to acquire some knowledge of its vocabulary and grammar, which may not unreasonably be applied to the further understanding of prophetic works in which this lan-guage was used.
We have already seen the importance of the number 666 in the dimensions of the Temple and in the ratios of metrology, reflecting the dominant position which this number occupies within the hier-archy of powers. 666 is the number of absolute positive energy, emanating from the nucleus to the satellites. Like all symbolic numbers it has no single identity or personification, being of the nature of Plato's essences, a concept of the mind, invented to express a certain tendency, which is apparent within all classes of pheno- mena. 6 is the number of the physical creation, the cosmos, and 666, the trinity of sixes, represents the active side of that number, 3 being the first numerical symbol of positive energy. Thus the reference of 666 is to material as opposed to spiritual activity. As an elemental force, 666 represents the sun and the influence of solar radiation, corresponding in society to the emperor, and in the in- dividual to the principle of intellect and will. 666 is the generative power of the male, it is the electric shock that orientates the molecular structure, the leader directing the masses the word of command / Page 138 / instinctively obeyed. There is a tendency in all phenomena towards inertia and relapse into fixed pattern", which is evident both in physical nature and in the human mind. This tendency, which is characteristic of female and negative influence, is opposed by all that is represented in the number 666. The sun drives the planets and a similar order prevails within the atom; a nation is animated by the strength and justice of its ruler, the individual by his intellect and power of decision. Every situation in life contains an element which corresponds to 666, the supreme solar representative within the hierarchy of numbers. Where the proportions are correct, the influence of the number 666 promotes fertility, gives life and colour, but where it becomes excessively dominant, the consequences are apparent in the tyranny of the self-willed governor, and in the de- velopment of a society obsessed with fantasies of violence, material wealth and power. The rays of the sun are filtered through the pro-tective atmosphere, and reach the seed through the medium of the earth. Were it not so they would destroy all. Following this analogy, the number 666, as it appears in the dimensions of temples, must al-ways be combined with numbers of a female, lunar or terrestrial character, and this result may be achieved by the use of the canonical figures of sacred geometry. We have seen in earlier chapters some-thing of the geometrical relationship between such numbers as 666, 1080 and 353 and the importance of 666 in the ratios of the foot to the megalithic yard and other ancient units. Where the pro-portions of regular geometry are measured by the canonical stan-dards of length, a balanced scheme of numerology will become apparent in the dimensions.
The force of the number 666 is expressed by the Chinese in the symbol of the procreative dragon, relating to the first hexagram of the I Ching oracle. According to Wilhelm's commentary, 'the dragon is a symbol of the electrically charged, dynamic arousing force that manifests itself in the thunderstorm. In winter this energy withdraws into the earth; in the early summer it becomes active again, appear- ing in the sky as thunder and lightning. As a result the creative forces on earth begin to stir again.' Whoever acquires this elemental view of nature is not likely to attribute eternal values to the various theologies and moral codes of human invention..."
